Money and Monstrous

No wonder that money makes monstrous. The first example pops up to me is the Joker and his allies in Batman. Although in the comic series Joker fell out because of the loss of his face, family and everything, in Nolan's Dark Knight money became one of the motivation for this infamous criminal. Even if he wasn't attracted by the money but the sense of achievement during the process, it was the money that allowed him to have so many criminals to work for him. Without money, he might be only a single cruel criminal, but he finally made it to the head of an underground crime organization in Gotham. Joker and his allies represent a typical group of criminals who cares little about others' lives. In Nolan's film, based on his theory, money is just a superficial reason why Gotham became the city of sin. Beyond that, it is the greed as well as the pursue to a sense of control that drives them to become the one of the most infamous monsters in DC universe.

Similarly, for Two Face, another famous character in the same film of Batman, he owned wealth and fame but still became the devil eventually. The reason why he became like that is also for losing everything he valued. Hence, we can see that the greed for wealth or fame may be the motivation for being monstrous, but the pursue of the sense of control in everything is a deeper reason. Both of them lost things they once valued, just as Batman did. Indeed Batman suffered as well after his parents' death and he went to Tibet for training. Once he got through it, he revived. However, for Joker and Tow Face, when they lost everything, they fell out without hesitation. They feared the feeling of loss and they cannot stand things out of control.
