We have been considering examples of the automaton or robot
over the past few weeks. Like the monster, the robot is a metaphor or
conceptual tool that allows us to think about or question what we mean by
“human.” Clearly some of the tropes associated with the figures we have
considered have carried through to stories, films, or TV shows today that deal
with robots, androids, AIs, and so on. Of course, from the 1920s to today, much
has changed, and we live in a world that has been radically altered by new technological
inventions and developments (the Internet being perhaps the most significant).
So, what I’d like to see is an analysis of a contemporary example
of robots, AIs, androids, or any other related figure. What I’d like you to do
is to think about how the example that you choose responds to contemporary technologies or social structures. How is the figure a product of our time? Are there particular fears
or anxieties connected to the figure? Does the figure raise questions about what it means to be
human? Does is challenge or reconfirm some of the presuppositions we have about
what a human is?
