For my blog post I want to talk about Scientolgy and Ron L Hubbard it's founder. I watched the documentary Going Clear awhile back and it seemed
like the perfect setting to talk about excessive greed or power turning people into monsters.
Scientology in a quick sentence is a practice of deep self reflection in order to clear yourself of all past trauma to become 'Clear' . In a way its a mix of psychotherapy and Buddhism. With this 'religion' Hubbard creates a sovereign over the followers and becomes a monster.
I would contrast him to Prospero. Where Prospero with his power of manipulation ends up doing some good, Hubbard uses it to brainwash
and take control of people. To first explain how Hubbard becomes monstrous you have to know what Scientology is. To participate, one must go through a series of audits.
What that means is you and a auditor will be in a room where he/she will
ask you to talk about your traumatic experiences. All the while the auditor is trying to delve deeper and have you reveal more. This in isolation isn't so bad but to get audits you have to pay money. And the amount of money goes up with every session. If you stop coming to events auditors are known to black mail you among other horrible things so you cant escape. And soon enough you become brain-washed. He essentially creates a situation where he becomes the sovereign be cause he is the head of Scientology.
Money alone didn't make Hubbard monstrous however. To become a monster
something has be fundamentally wrong with society of where the monster came to be. There is some truth to Daston and Park's Wonders and the Order of Nature. In that text they wrote about the 3 paradigms of how society views the monster. In one of the views they say that the monster is a symbol that society has sinned and god has made the monster as a warning. It can be interpreted that society has created the conditions possible for a monster to exist. The people that was with Hubbard were monsters in their own sense and that only fueled him. Because they allowed themselves to be manipulated and extort, blackmail and attack enemies of Scientology.

In a sense all religions are like that not just Scientology. All religions out there will manipulated you in some way that is appropriate to thier own standard. I think what scientology is doing is the same as other religions.
