Now known today, there are is no such thing as witchcraft
but people today can still be classified as a witch relating to Palmer’s
classifications and todays speculations on witches. Palmer describes witches as
sexual deviant, powerful, and out of the norm. So I will be relating Miley
Cyrus as a contemporary witch. We all know in the past few years something
changed with Miley and she started to dress in a more “revealing” way and
gesturing towards sexual gestures while thousands of her fans watched. Also
Miley is very powerful in terms of her followers. Still, after her
transformation from Disney star to “witch,” countless fans adore her and her
music that she creates. Today I do not believe that many people classify
witches as some human that creates some sort of witchcraft that no other normal
human can conjure. I think that the “witch” is seen as almost someone that we
are afraid of. Miley for instance, alarmed so many people because of a quick
transformation of appearance and behavior that many thought it was repulsive.
Additionally parents in particular probably were frightened because they didn’t
want to see their daughter to change into someone like that. This is true with
the early modern period too. Some witches made the society that they lived in
afraid of its behavior. They did this slightly differently but the underlining
principles are still hold true. Although I chose a female representation for a “witch,”
today I do not think that gender classifies a witch. Easily a male could be
classified as a witch as well.
I find your post very comical, but also there is a lot of truth to it. Yes, Miley Cyrus has made a tremendous transformation from her early days of being Hannah Montana. I read somewhere that she actually did not like being Hannah Montana at all. She despised that she had to put on this act so that people would like her. She is obviously expressing herself now, and it comes to a shock to many people. But, I guess you can say that is who she is. I personally do not believe that being a witch is a real thing, but if it was she would be a very good candidate for being a 21st century witch. I feel like that if people start believing that she is a "witch," it is only because they are afraid of who the real Miley Cyrus is. They would not want to see their daughters turn into something like her, so that is why they would label her as some kind of deviant.
