My paper for the last assignment was about a certain genre of monster, not an individual one. I wrote about zombies. Like I explained in my paper, this monster isn’t really my favorite. Even the general image of a zombie makes me feel so unsettled, this mass of decay and rot is limping (or in some cases running) at you. Oh, and it could’ve just awhile ago been the love of your life, or your sibling, or school teacher. This creature does have a lot of symbolism and quite a cultural impact but I just can’t let it be my favorite because of how queasy they make me . Zombies can be related to many of the theses in the reading but I personally connected them to the Fear of the Monster Is Really a Kind of Desire right away. So many people already have almost, in my opinion and no offence intended, unrealistic ideas of a zombie apocalypse that is bound to happen. Some of these people have hundreds of dollars invested in weapons and provisions and have spent hours of their lives planning out exactly what to do when the inevitable strikes.
While other monsters share the same popularity as the zombies these days like vampires and werewolves, I don’t think their die hard fans react in exactly the same way. I feel zombies also represent the escapist fantasies as explained in this thesis because of how many modern zombies tales take the audience to a survival state, and remove any government from existence. I also feel like zombies and escapism also connect to the possible effect of a zombie apocalypse. Let’s say you somehow defeated the zombie outbreak, you’d have a fresh new start at every part of civilization. Even if you didn’t get the chance to run this civilization I think the idea of being a part of something that meaningful sounds desirable to many audiences.
